Story | Sgt Karubin a member of the Polish Air Force was on a Formation training exercise with another Polish Pilot over Cumberland, Due to very low cloud cover both aircraft flew at high speed into a hill at Horn Crag, Scafell in Cumberland. He was a member of 55 Opertional Training Unit (OTU) flying a Type 1 Hurricane. He died on the 12th August 1941 and is buried at Castletown Cemetery in Hylton. Sgt Karubin D.F.M. was an experienced Pilot and was flying as an instructor with 55 OTU, he had flown with 111 Eskadra Squadron in Poland and shot down a Bf110 in Spet 1940, he was credited with a total of 7 kills. Remains of the crash can still be seen having been turned into a memorial
