Story | Born in Boldon 1801 to Parents Brack and Elizabeth Shorter, Robert judging by his military history probably came from a mining background. He enlisted in the Royal sappers and Miner Corps 9th Company in 1822 at the age of 21. He serverd in the regiment for over 27 years with 14 of those years stationed in Corfu. He was awarded a Silver Medal and £10 annuity for his Meritonous Service and Exemplory Character. He was recorded on the 1851 census as living in Woolwich with his wife Margaret and Son Robert Brack Shorter and on 1861 census with wife, son and daughters Margaret, Kate and Anne.
