StoryInlcuded in the list of Civil Defence workers commended for bravery in the London Gazette is the name of Mrs Joyce Oliver of Boldon. During an air raid when the police station where Mrs Oliver was on duty was hit and damaged. She remained at her post at the telephone while debris was falling all around her. She took entire charge of the police station during the raid and until the early hours of the morning when she was relieved. Mrs Oliver was 22 years of age and married to Private Matthew Oliver of the Corps of Military police.
