Joyce Oliver nee Wilson on the 1939 Register living with parents William Wilson a Colliery Fireman Examineer below born 29/8/1895 and Eleanor Wilson born 9/4/1897, worked as a Drapery Assistant at the local Coop Store. Joyce was Included in the list of Civil Defence workers commended for bravery in the London Gazette. During an air raid when the police station where Mrs Oliver was on duty was hit and damaged. She remained at her post at the telephone while debris was falling all around her. She took entire charge of the police station during the raid and until the early hours of the morning when she was relieved. Mrs Oliver was 22 years of age and married to Private Matthew Oliver of the Corps of Military police. |
