Story | Henry was born in Poona India while his father was serving in the Crimean War. When Age 12 he joined his fathers regiment, the 35th Duke OF Wellingtons as a drummer boy under General Napier. A year later he went through Abyssinia as a member of the British Expeditionary Force. When his father was discharged from the army he also claimed the discharge of his son Henry. The family moved to Ryhope Colliery where Henry worked on the locamotives for 4 years before joining the army again aged 17. Henry served in the 42nd Black Watch in the Ashanti West African War. After 7 years service he left the army and returned to work in the pit employed at Boldon Colliery in 1888 as a Hewer where he worked till he retired in 1929 at age 75 after 41 years service. Henry was Married for many years Celebrating his Golden Wedding Aniversary in 1937, he would have four sons and five Daughters and over 14 Grandchildren. |
