| Story | Alfred served on the HMS Galatea in 1918, he was born in Sydenham Middlesex in 1882. He later married Isabella Mitchinson McFarlane in 1907. He was a Miner by trade labourer below ground on the 1911 census working at Harton Colliery. In 1918 they were living in Arnold street Boldon Colliery no doubt on time of elistment he was probably working in Boldon Pit. In 1939 the family were living in 2 Hedworth Cottages with a daughter Bessie Hepburn (later Ford) b 9/1/1931. It appears Alfred originally enlisted in the army as a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery no 52603 in 1914 then discharged in 1915. He then shows up in the navy in 1917 as a Stoker K43011 on the HMS Galatea, many of the enlisted from the colliery's were used as stokers or Sappers likely due to their previous work in the pits.
